Helping Clients Live Well and Die Well:
A Focus on Medical Decision-Making
at End of Life

Note: Zoom room opens 15-30 minutes early for casual networking
and stays open 10 minutes after the end of the Cafe.

Presented by:

Teresa Quadres, LCSW

In this workshop, we will look at an overview of death in America and the role we play as therapists. We will start by exploring why the topic of death is taboo in our culture and why it’s so important to talk about it. An overview of the history, current reality and future of the way we die in America will set the context for our discussion. Since death touches all of our clients--as well as all of us--at some point, it is essential for therapists to feel comfortable discussing end of life issues and to have a good understanding of how to guide and support advance care planning and medical decision making.

Death used to be a quick, natural process that usually happened at home so it was woven into family life. Now it can be prolonged, hidden and medicalized. And yet, in the era of COVID-19, awareness and fear about death is heightened. As medical technology continues to advance, the line between life and death is increasingly undefinable, creating an end of life process wrought with stressful and sometimes traumatic medical decision making for which patients and families are often ill-prepared.

Teresa Quadres will lay out some of the practical information that is important to support planning, as well as an approach to facilitating family conversations about a patient’s personal values and medical goals. Among our therapist community, we will also talk about the many benefits of having these kinds of discussions with our clients. The session will end with a review of services available to people with serious illness (including the difference between hospice and palliative care), as well as resources and references to support therapists, clients and families through these often avoided conversations about what’s important at the end of life.
