More Than a Couple: Working with Clients Who are Non-Monogamous   with Michael Guichet, LMFT

Non-monogamous relationships are becoming more prevalent in society and being talked about favorably in media. 1 in 5 people states that in their life they have been in a non-monogamous relationship and when surveyed 5% of people state that they are currently in polyamorous relationships. In non-monogamy, there are many different styles, labels, cultures, rules, structures, and practices depending on the people in the relationship. Often in therapy, clients do not share their alternative relationship style, in a fear that they will be judged or rejected. There are many ways to support and invite clients in non-monogamous relationships share their struggles.

Michael Guichet will discuss the special considerations of working with non-monogamous, polyamorous, swinging, and open clients. The therapeutic experience allows for clients to bring their vulnerability into each session and that can include their sexual selves.

  • Therapists attending will be able to identify different forms of non-monogamy
  • Therapists attending will be able to identify countertransference concerns with alternative relationship styles
  • Attendees will be able to discuss with clients the importance of boundaries, rules, and relationship agreements and examine how or if they are necessary
  • Therapists will leave with tools and resources for discussing with clients looking to opening up a relationship
